“A clever ad for HSBC by Ogilvy & Mather Mumbai ad agency in India. The bank wanted to raise awareness of the dangers of global warming, so the clever ad guys glued an aerial photo of a city’s skyscrapers to the base of a swimming pool …”

The BEST week ever

The week of January 6th - 11th will come down in history as one of the GREATEST weeks ever and yes, I know it is still a long ways from today but I wanted to share my excitement about not only the soon-to-be third National Championship for my Gators but also for SCRUBS!

Yes, the new season is only weeks away and I cannot wait! Since ABC took over the show, they have done an outstanding job at marketing the 8th, and last, season by releasing sneak previews along with a series of great commercials. Here is one of those marketing-oriented sneak previews from ABC. Enjoy.

Venice Flooded, Wow

venice italy flooded
These are some pretty crazy images, especially that I was explaining my experiences in Venice to my friend early today.  So for the news stats: this is deepest flood in 22 years (1986, the year when most the CR writers were born) and the 4th highest flood.  The Boston Globe did a 25 BIG picture editorial on this flood. After the JUMP I have added a few of my pics from the The Boston Globe.

Starbucks economic theory

Deadly Cup of Starbucks

Slate’s
Daniel Gross proposes “the Starbucks theory of international
economics”: namely, the more Starbucks a country has, the more likely
that country “is to have suffered catastrophic financial losses.”
Caffeine-happy America, with nearly 200 Starbucks in Manhattan alone,
obviously supports the point, particularly as Starbucks strategically
opened stores on the ground floors of investment banks, to fuel
late-night CDO deals. More casualties: London has 265 stores, South
Korea 253, etc., etc. Yet Africa, Central America, and Italy do not
have a single Starbucks store and have been insulated from the economic
collapse. Gross predicts that Turkey, with 67 stores, will be next on
the recession list.

Shawn Frayne - Turbine-Less Wind Generator

Working in Haiti, Shawn Frayne, a 28-year-old inventor based in Mountain View, Calif., saw the need for small-scale wind power to juice LED lamps and radios in the homes of the poor. Conventional wind turbines don’t scale down well—there’s too much friction in the gearbox and other components. “With rotary power, there’s nothing out there that generates under 50 watts,” Frayne says. So he took a new tack, studying the way vibrations caused by the wind led to the collapse in 1940 of Washington’s Tacoma Narrows Bridge (aka Galloping Gertie).

Frayne’s device, which he calls a Windbelt, is a taut membrane fitted with a pair of magnets that oscillate between metal coils. Prototypes have generated 40 milliwatts in 10-mph slivers of wind, making his device 10 to 30 times as efficient as the best microturbines. Frayne envisions the Windbelt costing a few dollars and replacing kerosene lamps in Haitian homes.
