Listen 2: John Frusciante/ Nas
Two highly recommended albums/ artists.
For a while I've been listening to the solo music of Red Hot Chili Peppers' guitarist John Frusciante. In the past, during a hiatus from the band(in which he was on the verge of drug addiction and depression), Frusciante released beautiful solo music that blends his awesome guitar style with electronic synthesizers. Currently, he is releasing one album every month for six months(I think he just released his fourth of the series:Inside of Emptiness). As in his past work, his sound is somewhat melancholy(as he chronicled his descent into drugs), yet hopeful.
*Frusciante also produced the soundtrack to the controversial indie film, Brown Bunny.
In the world of hip hop, Nas' latest release, Hip Hop is Dead, is a breath of fresh air from rap that's played on popular radio. Nas' even addresses this issue in the title song saying:
Criticize that? Why is that?
Cuz Nas' rap is compared to legitimized crap
Cuz we love to talk on a$$ we gettin'
Most intellectuals wil only half listen
So you can't blame jazz musicians
Or David stern with his NBA fashion issues
Nas looks to the state of rap with a critical eye, yet does not abandon it(his last track is titled 'Hope'). He is one of the only rappers today whom addresses hip hop with a larger realization of the scope of the world outside of hip hop yet still remains faithful to 'the game.' As always, Nas stands as a bridge between mainstream rap and socially conscious intellectual lyricists.
